So to hook up our new Plotter we need more cable for the antenna than was supplied (long story). No big deal right? WRONG!! Joe could not find it, so I called Garmin to find out how to buy either an extension or just more cable. Guess what, can't be done, Tech sopport told me to go to lowes and buy 28 gauge wire and run each of the 8 strands separately, each strand representing one of hte 8 color wire.
They do not and can not sell me more cable, or do they supply extra cable to any of the resellers. I told them I am amazed that I am the only person in the world who bought a Garmin antenna and did not for whatever reason need to extend or relace the cable.... Crazy stuff!!
I guess I will buy another antenna and cut the cable off of it for the extension, Nucking Futs !!!!

it'd be cheaper to just buy the 28 guage wire. Solder 'em together and shrink wrap em.

jim i like your thinking for the already shielded cable. problem with doing the individual wires is there will be no shielding to cut out any other interference.
if i can help out let me know.
on another thought i have an old gps antenna that had the end broke of it. if it is 8 wires you can have it and it is already shielded

Oh chit, I'm a moron......
Garmin shipped me another antenna when I sent back my 4208. It's yours if you want it.
GPS 17 is the model number.

Jim, The last time I was in Eastern Marine they had a Garmin cable a bin next to the electronics. It was discontinued but it had the plug on one end and nothing on the other end. How long does the cable have to be? Any electonics supply house or even McMaster Carr sells sheilded cable with as many conductors as you need and the quick connect plugs for them. I made a cable for my older Garmin Unit last year.

NIce, Bob and Matey it has to be eight strand and 28 gauge (or 5 strand as we only are using the plotter function) I'll take it if it is... Mark, I will look up if the others are not corrert Shane, apology accepted, you were quick I did not even get a chance to say something smart...

how short is the cable? do we really need to go to the top of the tower?

Why do you need a longer cable? Your electronics box is like 6" away from the mid tower. That is plenty good enough for a gps.
The aluminum abv it won't really effect it. If your worried just put it as far forward as you can w/ the existing cable.
When I put my garmin in I tested it shooting thru my entire center console because I had a crazy idea to mount it below the console or in the electronics box. I didn't do it but it worked thru (2) 3/4" pieces of plywood w/ fiberglass on (4) sides.

Jim,
Yeah it is the 8 strand one, I'm 99% sure. I remember pregnant doging @ Garmin when I had to wire up power to it.

CAT 5 cable is 8 strand but is likely 24 awg.
Most are unshielded ........if you need shielded get plenum.
I guess I'm confused why you need such a long run ? I myself would relocate the antenna so I didn't have to splice the cable. The cable splice could be a problem in the future due to corrosion, vibration....yada, yada.
Let me know if I can help in any way !

We ran the wire thru the tuna tower and put the Ant on the VERY top of the tuna tower. So, with all of the runs - we are short in getting to the helm area.
Hope we can find a solution by this weekend so we can cross this off THE LIST
