One of the guys that works here has a small trihull boat w/ an older 70hp evenrude.
We were talking about his boat and he said he's on a limited budget this year and can't afford to send the boat out for repairs.
Here's what I know:
Boat starts up Boat runs at idle Boat STOPS when it is placed into gear - Fwd or Rev.
The ball is hard and claims the hoses are new.
Any suggestions?
LMK if you need more info and I will ask.

Does it rev up if it's in neutral, if so most outboards and I/O's have a monentary switch that cuts the engine out when you shift. Sometimes they go bad and sometimes they go out of adjustment. It should be conected to the shift cable on the engine. You can jump it, but then it will allow you to shift at high RPM's not a good thing, but that will tell you if thats the problem.

phoenix29 I had one go bad on my 2001 Johnson. You can run w/o it but you take a chance tearing up the gears on the higher RPM's. It actualy drops one side of the motor then kicks back in after gears have been change.I ran mine for a few weeks w/o problems. it was call a safety interupter switch on my motor. Its just a push pin switch that rides on a lobe that has a quick disconect plug . Very easy to replace if thats the problem.
