talked to the mechanic at the dealer where i picked up my boat and he said the e-tec is nice but still recomends the 4 stroke. guess you need to run special oil in the e-tec that is like $30or$40 per gallon and they drink it pretty well. don't know for sure that's just what he said.

Jim Phillips swears by the E-Tec, that is all I need....
If you can't afford the oil (gas) you can't afford the boat, common Josh!!
Also, heard you guys corrupted a minor saturday, at least a minor to you idiots....

Yeah they show that Evinrude infomercial on VS all the time. What a crock! Yeah, 2 strokes have more torque out of the gate, but when you look at all of the other advantages that 4-strokes offer (fuel economy, reliability, not having to buy oil....etc) it's a no-brainer.

Well one of the biggest negatives to the 4 stroke is that they are way heavieer. this means older boats might not see the performance pick p that newer boats do as they were not designed for the extra weight at the rear and this could offset their performance by changing the way it rides in the water to a less efficient angle.

..........and their longevity has yet TBD !
How much does the 100 hour maint. cost ? How much are oil changes ? These are likely more than the cost of special 2S oil.
I love my Yamaha 150 2stroke HPDI's !

Depends on your piorities. I repowed two years ago and the biggest bang for the buck was a new in box 2002 150hp Mercury two stroke. The motor was cheap, it's not a fuel hog. The newer technology is good and pretty well perfected now but the price difference was astonishing. I got 3 quotes on rigged 150 to 200 HPDI was twice what I paid for the Merc. I would had to have burned a couple thousand gallons even at 3 bucks a gallon to reach the break even point on the hdpi. That particular Merc is pretty bulletproof and evryone knows how to fix them. With 2 in college every 5000 counts, and the cost of ownership analysis favored the carb'd engine.
